A constantly active body

The church, then, as a body of Christians, is constantly active; it is a network of actors reaching into many different parts of city and rural life. It is not only this collection of hymn-singing people, listening to the exposition of the Word and receiving that Word in the sacrament, but also a multidimensional, multigendered activity, living continually beyond its means, transcending by grace all its physical, cultural, and historical limitations, being in relation, productive of relation, being in communion, productive of communion across both space and time. The church is this body of action, this body in action that is both temporal and eternal, material and spiritual. There is no body without this activity, for it is the body of Christ only in and through this continuous operation. This great extensive Catholic body is not in the world or entirely of the world, but it is engaged in creating the world anew, reassembling the social. (Graham Ward, Politics of Discipleship)

A conscientious objection

I’ve seen again the last year’s Easter message from David Cameron (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1qo1gd4klc), together with quite enthusiastic comments from some of my Christian friends. It made me feel uneasy. As a Christian, I am certainly glad that with such a statement Christianity is placed in the public sphere, where it belongs, and I strongly agree with various points being made – like the one that recognizes that Christianity can and does have a positive effect on general public life and the flourishing of the whole society. However, I must raise a Christian objection against the main point propagated here: the “Christian country” or “Christian nation”.

Dear Mohammed, who is Jesus?

This is my response to an Islamic critique of the christian view of Jesus, which I had received from a certain Mohammed on my Facebook page devoted to Jesus. Later I found out that it was just a copy of a standard Muslim polemical tract on the subject. I have written my response in the light of the New Testament and the affirmations found in the Qur’an.

Dear Mohammed!

Thank you for asking the most important question of all – who is Jesus. Thank you also for sharing an Islamic view on this all-important subject Nadaljuj z branjem “Dear Mohammed, who is Jesus?”

12 Theses on the Violence in the Old Testament

1. God is the creator of all that exists and he is also giving being and existence to everything each second.

2. God has created man (male and female) so that he would enter into a personal, partner, I-Thou relationship with them.  Nadaljuj z branjem “12 Theses on the Violence in the Old Testament”

Theology of Translation

An Introductory Inquiry

“Theology is translation.” This is a quote of Richard Gehman by Philip Noss in the special issue of The Bible Translator (BT) devoted to translation and theology (BT 53, 3 [2003]: 333). The papers therein present an important starting point in acknowledging a positive relationship between the two, but at the same time show that the real discussion of the subject has, in fact, only started. And, given the goal of BT, they focus mainly on specific issues and concrete details, without trying to provide a bigger picture, a theological framework for the discussion of this broad topic. With my contribution, I want to initiate an examination of the relationship between the theology and translation in three areas or stages of interaction. They can be provisionally defined as follows: I. Theological presuppositions of translation; II. Translation process as theological act; III. Theological effects of translation.
